My friends and I are the only black students enrolled at the school, so I can attest to that.
In some states, performing arts schools for youth are segregated by race, and when we compare the demographics of the area in Michigan and Indiana, its more than just the demographics of the school. In both states, performing arts schools are also more diverse than many private schools. In Indiana, for example, performing arts high schools are nearly as diverse as the city they serve, and in Michigan the schools are even more diverse than the city they serve.
What this means is that there are more performing arts schools in these two states than most private schools. For example, the University of Michigan has over 100 performing arts schools, and the University of Michigan Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts is one of the largest. In Indiana, there are about 50 performing arts schools, and the University of Michigan Academy and the University of Michigan School of Music has the largest number of schools.
But even if the number of schools in each state is equal, there are still a lot of schools with a large number of students. Both schools have a very successful track record, but the University has a significantly larger budget than the Academy of Music does. That means that the University can afford to offer more training to students, and the Academy of Music only has a very limited budget for its programs. Thus, even though the Academy of Music has a larger budget than the University, the University is able to offer higher quality training programs for its students.
