“The dean of college” is a position that most people think of when they think of university, and it’s a position that many people think of when they think of dean. However, that distinction is a little fuzzy, isn’t it? A dean of something is someone who is an “executive” of that thing. For example, in the case of the university, it might be someone who runs the department of English.
The dean position is a little bit different than the other professors in the college, because as a dean you are more than just the one who teaches and the one who writes papers. In fact, you are the chief administrative officer at the university. You are responsible for all administrative aspects of the college, from its finance, to its budgeting, to its building projects, to its public relations, to its recruitment process. The dean is more than just a teacher, and more than just a professor.

This is a great concept, and I think it applies to the job of dean. As with other jobs, the key is to do what you do best, which is to make sure that your budget is spent efficiently and wisely. While the college is still the CEO, it’s the Dean of Arts and Sciences who has the day-to-day responsibility for keeping the budget in the right direction.
Like other jobs, there are a variety of ways to make sure that you spend the money and get the results you want. One is to hire someone to oversee the budget process. Another is to have a staff member who is responsible for keeping tabs on the budget. One of the best things you can do to ensure that your budget is well managed is to pay your employees well. And most likely, this is also your biggest concern right now.
