I have been teaching law for a decade now and have seen many students get frustrated with their professor’s lectures. It’s not that the teacher is bad, it’s that they are giving them too much information and not enough time to really learn. As a result, students are often frustrated because they aren’t getting the best grade, or they feel like they are wasting their time and should be studying instead.
Although professors are supposed to give students the information they need, they should be giving them time to get it. The law school that I attended has a very strict time-out policy that states that if a student is not able to focus for more than 10 minutes without being interrupted by a professor or other student, they must leave. The problem is that students have also recently seen their professors use that time-out as an excuse to not teach.
There are two ways to deal with this. The first is to just send out a note telling your students that you are working on something important and won’t be able to talk with them until they leave. The second, more practical approach is to put a time-out on your class meetings. You’ll want to do this because a professor will often make it very clear that they do not want to be interrupted.

So when you’re chatting with another person who has a book that they are trying to get rid of or sell, you don’t know if they are really that concerned about it or if you are being a dick. The same goes for libraries.
