I have been in the field of performing arts for 12 years now, working in an acting school for several of those years. In my experience, it seems that most people are comfortable performing in front of an audience or at a stage for a few hours or days, but a lot of people feel that they can’t do it without the performance itself.
Yes, it’s true that the performing arts school itself is a small, private organization, but there is a wide range of ways that people can find the performing arts to their liking. Some people are just comfortable acting in front of an audience, and others want to do it in front of people. For me, I love performing in front of people in restaurants and bars, for example.
In many cases a performing arts school is what people are looking for. There are some, especially in the US, that are specifically looking for actors and actresses. But even in the US, there is a huge range of choices as to what schools the students can attend. Some are state-run or private, some are community-based, some are purely for individuals.
With all of this in mind, it’s not surprising that so many schools will have their own performing arts school. As I mentioned earlier, there are a few things to keep in mind when you’re considering which school to attend, not only the cost but the type of school, and the atmosphere of the school.
In the US, school choice is a very large issue. We are, after all, constantly deciding what kind of school our children will attend. Schools that focus on academics (which may include art, music, dance, or performing arts) tend to be much more expensive. For those that do go to a performing arts school, costs will probably go up but the atmosphere will be different.
In the UK, we have the National College of Art, known as NCA. Unlike NCA, they don’t concentrate on art, but instead on performing arts. In the US, it’s much more difficult to take the leap from an art school to an acting school. It is possible, of course, because many of our children will be actors or dancers, but it’s much more expensive and the atmosphere is much more theatrical.
The NCA is no longer an art school, but rather, it is a professional performing arts school. They have their own school, named after the legendary NCA building. The name is a bit of a mouthful because NCA itself is just the name of their school, and NCA is just the name of the school building (itself).
NCA has two buildings, the former being the NCA School and the latter being the NCA Academy. The NCA School is where students get their degrees and the NCA Academy is where the school’s faculty works. The NCA Academy, which is located in London, the UK, is the place where the students’ acting/dramatic training takes place.
