In Korean, “Jung” means “to develop” or “progress,” while the name of his hometown is a shortened form of its former provincial capital Gyeongju. And in Japanese, ‘Kou’ means ‘sun’. So combined it can mean someone who has developed into a sun that shines on everyone else. How cute!
– Suga
Suga’s stage name was given to him by BTS producer Pdogg at YG Entertainment and stands for ‘Agust D’, an alternate spelling of August D. It could also stand for 슈가 (shu gu), which translates as sɯ kka (sugar). The
If you’re a fan of K-pop, chances are that you know the names of all seven members from BTS. But do you know their meanings and origins? Let’s find out!
Some people believe that Rap Monster may be short for “Rap Monologue.”
Jin is an abbreviation for “Seok Jin” which means “pure gold.” It could also stand for his stage name ‘진 주팔란 달군다’ or Jin Ju Pal Ra Randa (Pure Gold). He shares this nickname with other famous Koreans such as Sunwoo Jung Ah and Namchul Kim, who won medals in the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Many people believe that Jungkook may have been given his name because he was born in 1997, which is also known as ’97 증기동족’ (Jung-ki dong gu). This means ‘the year of the gas monkey’ and it refers to those who were born during a time when Korea experienced an economic crisis and many people lived without heat or running water.
Namjoon’s stage name is short for “Rap Monster.” He shares this nickname with other famous Koreans such as Sunwoo Jung Ah and Namchul Kim, who won medals in the 1976 Summer Olympics. His Korean given name stands for “the one who has everything as his own” and he shares this meaning with other famous Koreans such as Park Ji-Soo, the first female cabinet member in Korea.
Jin is a Korean given name that means “god of the sea.” It’s also an old Japanese word for “jewel” or “precious stone.” Jin may have been named after Seoul’s Han River because it used to be called the ‘Hanjin.’ Furthermore, Jin is often referred to as a gemstone due to its various meanings (i.e., preciousness, radiance).
Shinji was not only picked by BTS’ members themselves but they decided on their new group name together during 2010 when music video director Lumpens suggested it. Shinji suggests “the force of mind.”
Min means ‘wonderful’ in Korean and is a common name; there are more than 100,00 people with this first name living in South Korea. Min is also the word for beauty or charm in Japanese: an attribute that can be applied to Jin’s attractive voice as well as his good looks.
Jimin’s given names mean “golden bird who flies high” which perfectly reflects the meaning behind BTS song lyrics such as “..I’m just chasing after my dream like a golden eagle so I won’t give up even if I get hurt” from “The Bird Without Wings”.
Taehyung was not always his name. His given names are actually just one syllable: Jungkook, which means “eternal” or “everlasting.”
The K stands for J-Hope and is symbolic of the hope he wants to provide others with through music like a lighthouse at night; it also symbolizes that he’s willing to go far in order to fulfill these hopes and dreams as well as those surrounding him by shining brightly.
He has two middle names Jin-Young which mean respectively, “successor,” or someone who will succeed their parents’ work from generation to generation, and “prosperous mountain” or someone who can bring prosperity into society. The fact that his family history includes government officials is symbolic of this.
The last name Kim means “golden” and he was given the nickname “Golden Maknae” because of his light-blonde hair as a toddler, hence why it became one of his most famous nicknames.
It seems that Jungkook’s birth year (1994) on Instagram may have been an error since many sources cite him to be born in 1995 instead; either way, they are both considered lucky years for South Koreans according to their lunar calendar which means success and prosperity will come easily within these two respective periodsespecially with all the hard work he has put into producing music for others!
