I’ve been a professional woodworker for over 30 years, and I’ve been designing, building, and furnishing our home for 15 years. I wanted to share some tips for those of you who want to get started and build some beautiful, functional, and functional woodwork.
With new builds the first thing you must do is decide what your needs are and prioritize them. A good starting point is to put a bunch of “what you need” goals in the first design phase of construction, and then to prioritize them even further the further you get into your home. As your needs change, so too will your priorities.
The best way to start is to think of your needs. I put together this handy list of all the things I currently need and then a more detailed list of what I want in my new home. The list is a lot bigger than it seems because I include things like electricity, water, a bathroom, etc. and keep track of what I need and what I’m willing to pay for each.
Wood floors are one of the best flooring choices for a new home. They also have a few perks. They’re cheap, they don’t require much maintenance, and they can be installed in a variety of ways. Wood is a great choice because of its durability. You can even put in laminate flooring. Of course, if you’re building a new home, you’ll need to look into laminate floors.
The benefits of wood floors are quite a few, but the main reason to go for wood floors is that they are one of the best ways to prevent water damage. Because of this, youll want to make sure that your new floor is well sealed to keep water from getting in. Some flooring companies even recommend that you seal with a caulk gun.
The other benefit of wood floors is that they make things a lot easier for your craftsman. With laminated floors, youll be dealing with plywood, with which youll have to deal with the rough edges and crevices. With wood floors, youll be dealing with a smooth surface that youll be able to get your handholds into.
For example, if you just want to build a simple vase, youll probably not want to go with hardwood. The only reason to go with wood is because it is easier to sand. If you want to do something like a teacup lamp, youll want to be sure that the feet are smooth. If they’re not, the lamp will swing around all over the place.
That’s not to say that using a soft surface makes it easier to work with. The rough edges and crevices will still show up on the surface. You just need to be on the lookout for them when you paint, and make sure that you’re able to get those edges and crevices into your paint.
A lot of people ask me, “how do I do this?” and I tell them to paint and sand carefully. I try to point out how many people paint over the top of their feet, or do things like sand a piece of plywood, which is not exactly going to be a seamless surface. I also tell them to look for imperfections in the surface you’re working on.
To get a real smooth surface you’ll want to use a paint that is stain resistant. Look for the stain resistant stain in the “stains” section of your paint’s label. You can also get stain resistant paint to use in your home by searching for “stain resistant” on paint.com.
