I’ve always believed that small business owners are a dime a dozen. We’ve all heard the “very small business owners are all millionaires” stories, and as a matter of fact they are more often than not. I’ve had the fortune of learning from and helping others who have come from the “very small business” or “micro business” ranks.
It’s very hard to know the exact proportions of the very small business owners. One study found that “people in the 3 to 9 percent of the population in the US spend about one-third of their income on small business.” Another found that “the average family in the US spends about $5,000 per year on businesses, while the average American family of four spend about $13,000 per year.
Ive also seen my own parents go from making $20,000 a year on their very small business to much more than $100,000 a year on their very large business. Ive seen the same thing with my friends who are also in the very small business ranks. A friend who makes about $100,000 a year is not just making $100,000 a year, he is also making a lot of the very same things that he can get his life’s work done.
