I am starting to think that the only way to be truly successful in business is to not worry about it. For most of my life I have been in a position where I have had to worry about my appearance and my business appearance. While I may not be the most confident person out there, I don’t want anything to slow me down. So I’m going to add to the long list of self-awareness exercises here.
The term “self-awareness” can get a little confusing because it doesn’t mean “awareness of yourself”. To be clear, it means being aware of the impact your actions have on your life. For example, if you’ve been working a long, boring job, you probably need to learn how to look more like a jack-of-all-trades. But that’s not to say you need to actually look like a jack-of-all-trades.
As you can imagine, if you are going to be working hard, you have to be aware of what you are working hard on. If you are a programmer, you may be working in a team of people who are all working on exactly the same project, or if you are a designer, you have to be aware of the design and trends that are going on because you could be designing for both a business and a fashion company.
We live in a society that says “look how well you looked yesterday.” But in reality, you may be the person who was working really hard to look that good because you weren’t thinking about yourself. You were thinking about other people who may need you to look that good.
It’s like the difference between making clothes and owning clothes. Your clothing designer has to be a fashion designer. Your clothing designer has to be a designer. But your clothes designer has to be a designer. You can’t just make great clothes. You can only design great clothes. You can only make great clothing if you invest in yourself first.
You’re the designer, man. You’re the one making the clothes. All you have to do it wear them.
As it turns out, one of the Visionaries on the island is just a guy with a great set of clothes. So he decides to steal one of them. Unfortunately for him, it’s not a costume that allows him to walk around in the manner he likes. He’s wearing a costume that allows him to teleport. So he runs into another Visionary, who tells him that his clothes were the ones that caused him to be out of character.
Well, no actually, that’s not entirely true, but you get my point. He doesnt want to be out of character, he wants to be in character.
This is the moment where I start to get a little teary-eyed because I know this is the moment where our hero meets his match. Colt Vahn is out of character because he can teleport when he wants to, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a hero in our eyes. A hero should be the embodiment of what we want a society to be. If that means that the guy who can teleport can be a hero, then that’s awesome.
But Colt can teleport, so he is a hero in our eyes. He has to be, because we don’t want to see him become a hero. And if he really is a hero, then we want to see him become a hero because he is the only one who can save the day. But his teleportation abilities are all a facade. He is completely at fault for everything that’s happened and he deserves to be punished for that. But he doesnt have to be.
