“Principia Artium Proprietatis” from the Latin “Principiantis artium propinquitatis” means “before the principal art.” The original meaning of this term is the art of the philosopher. To the ancient Greeks, the art of philosophy was the study of the nature of the universe.
In early Greek philosophy the word philosopher was used to describe someone who was the first to understand the truth of things and the true nature of the universe. As such, the art of the philosopher is the art of truth.
This is an interesting concept. The ancient Greeks were quite aware of the importance of art, but they didn’t have a word for the philosophical. The art of philosophy was the art of truth. In the ancient world, the art of truth was the art of philosophy. If art was the art of truth, then the artwork of the philosopher can and should be the artwork of the philosopher.
That is what most teachers I know of the old fashioned kind do. They spend most of their time teaching how to teach. If only all the teachers were like that.
I used to think the same way. I have taught Philosophy of Art for over twenty years. And I’ve always thought that if there was a way to teach philosophy of art, it had to be about how to create something new and interesting. I’ve never understood how it’s possible to teach the art of art. I’ve always wished I could see the process.
Art is a long and winding road. I mean, it has to be. If you make something that is purely aesthetic, the journey is cut short. However, if you make something that is based on some sort of real philosophical argument, then you might be able to teach art. Ive always believed that if you could describe the experience of creating something, then the experience of actually doing it would be an even better step. Ive always been amazed that it can be done.
It’s certainly possible. I’m sure we can all agree it would be a very difficult thing to accomplish. That is why Ive always felt that the most important aspect of art is the experience of it. The artist who has a strong experience of art, has an experience of creation.

I think the key is to take your artistic vision and find the best way to express it. It’s like every other art medium: You have to learn your craft, and then you’ll find the best way to express your vision. So I think it’s the experience that is the most important thing.
For me the most important thing is that I love to express the things I want to express and that I love to work with people who are interested in helping me achieve that. Thats why I think its important to find that experience.
