Since we are the ones who will really define our lives, our purpose, our relationships, and our selves, we have the opportunity to set them up in such a way that they are in line with what we desire, we are in line with what we want, and they are in line with our best self. We can’t control what our parents or our friends will want for us. We can’t control what our friends will think or say about us.
It is true that we cannot control the thoughts or actions of others. But if we do what we think is best for our selves, then we can control those of others. And if they think what we think is best for us, then we can control what they think.
A study of the self says that the most important part of self-awareness is the ability to recognize your own thoughts and motives. The ability to stop and think about your own actions is a key to self-awareness. For the past decade, I’ve been fascinated with the idea that people who are able to think about their behavior and motives also tend to create more optimal outcomes for themselves. This idea is called “stoic motivation,” and it has been studied for many years.
I think Ive read a lot about the role of stoic motivation in other things, but this is the most interesting and exciting study Ive seen. The paper says it all: “If one is aware of one’s own thoughts and motives, then one can be expected to act in a way that is beneficial to oneself.” It points out that you act differently when you think about your behavior, and when you think about your motives.
This paper is a great read for anyone that wants to gain motivation. The ideas aren’t very complicated, just a little abstract. A psychologist named Roger Brown studied stoic motivation for his master’s thesis. This was a decade ago, but I recently found that there is a great deal of interest in the idea today, especially in marketing and self-help books. Brown’s study has been used to study motivation in business, politics, and even in self-help classes.
A few people have expressed enthusiasm for the idea, but only a few are interested in it.
Brown’s theory is that being motivated by a goal requires us to create a “compulsion to achieve it”. Our brain is hardwired to reward ourselves when we’re motivated, and it is this reward that gives us the impulse to reach for a goal.
When a motivating goal is made available to us, we become curious about the goal because we want to be motivated to reach it. We want to get it, and we want to achieve it.
