As a math teacher, I always try to get my students to be able to see the value of their own intelligence. When they don’t, I try to get them to see how other people who are smart sometimes act. For example, the way that many students of color (particularly black students) act can be extremely frustrating to me. I have to be really careful to get them to understand that many of the behaviors they do are not really their fault.
There is a lot of racial stereotyping in the black community. It is not uncommon for a black child to be called a “nigger” by a white person. Yet the way that many white parents act toward black children is extremely stereotypical in my mind. At first, I was disgusted, but in time I realized that I was actually doing a great service. It is also not a bad thing to teach kids about the struggles faced by people of different races to get to where they are today.
