My favorite thing to do when I visit my local art supply store is to check out all the eye glass sets and other crafts that were made with glass eyes.
Glass is the perfect material for making eye sockets, because it is a perfect mirror-like surface. Glass is also easy to work with, and it is not too hard to polish.
So it turns out that eye glass is actually quite durable. In fact, it is one of the materials used in most of the glass-eye sets you will find. Most of these products are made of a glass-like material that is fairly strong and durable (think aluminum). A good glass eye set is durable enough that you can use it for a couple of years before it starts to crack.
This is also true of most of the eye sets you will find. Glass will last a long time, and is easy to work with.

Glass eyes can be very expensive. They can cost well over $100, and can be quite large, so you might want to make sure you know what you are doing. You can even use them as a guide for a blind person. This might be a fun project for your child in the future.
