I’ve been a m/m interior designer for five years now. I love the design elements that m/m offers, the creativity that comes from a collaborative effort with the designer, the creativity that comes with building a beautiful, high-functioning space, and the ability to meet and exceed the decorating expectations of our clients. I feel like I have a good handle on interior design here.
G/m interior designers are often the ones who come in and suggest we build the look of the room. I think that’s what makes mm great. It’s not just about the design. It’s about being able to build the space in a way that works for your client. And that’s where mm comes into play.
At its core, mm is a simple concept: meeting the decorating expectations of my clients. And since everything in my work is built with that in mind, I have to be totally hands-off during construction. I am not, however, allowed to mess with the clients decor. We can modify a room to work better with the decor, but we can’t force it.
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when they’re dealing with a new project is to expect their contractors to be perfect all the time. This is a mistake that they don’t even realize they’re making. And it’s one of the most common causes of construction delays. When you’re building a new home, you want to make sure you have all the pieces of a smooth, efficient process.
I know it does sound a little extreme, but we had a contractor come out to do our new build and he went completely overboard. Basically he had his assistant bring in every item and then try to figure out if you needed it. I don’t know if it worked, but it sure was a mess.
I think the biggest problem in the construction world is that the industry takes shortcuts that don’t need to be taken because they’re not a big deal. They’re so common that it can be hard to notice. Like, when you’re working on a renovation, you probably don’t notice every time you see a new nail. But when you’re in the construction industry, that’s a lot of extra time and effort that you don’t often have to spend money on.
Like with most things in life, it takes a little while to notice it. The good news is that the biggest problem in the construction world is that the industry takes shortcuts that dont need to be taken because theyre not a big deal. Theyre so common that it can be hard to notice. Like, when youre working on a renovation, you probably dont notice every time you see a new nail.
But the problems are just that much worse when youre working on a renovation. There are more things to do, more tools to be cleaned up, more people to contend with, and more contractors to deal with. As a construction worker, you don’t even think about money. It was all about the money and the more you had, the easier it would be to move on.
In the same vein, youd never think of an interior designer as being a money-hungry contractor. But you have to pay the bills. So, how much does it really cost to hire an interior designer? Well, there are two ways to do it.
You can either hire an interior designer as a contractor, or as an independent contractor. Both are acceptable. In the former case, you are able to negotiate your own rates, and the actual work can be done by other professionals. In the latter case, you hire someone to do it for you.
