Well, that’s not a real thing, but you get my point.
Gaia is a development studio that makes games in the “artificial intelligence” genre. It’s a company founded by the creators of the Matrix movie series and the creator of the ‘Matrix Reloaded’ game. But it seems that the studio is suffering from a financial crisis. The studio has been going through a “recession” for the last few years according to one of their press releases. So they’re scrambling to find other sources of funding to maintain production.
Well, that’s kind of interesting, because this isn’t the first time this has happened in the industry. EA bought a company called Next Wave Games in 2006 and closed the studio. The studio then went off to develop a new product called EA Games Studio that never got off the ground.
Even though they never produced an actual game, it seems that they did play a role in developing the idea of a Gaian universe. They seem to have been working on a new version of the game in-house. As I said, its a little weird that this has happened before, but it is definitely a change in direction for the studio.
Although this is just speculation, I’m guessing that EA wanted to put their name on a game that was being developed at the same time as Gaian. Gaian is a platform where players can build their own space stations and other items from scratch, and the game is being developed by an independent studio.
Some of the speculation points to the “EA” being based in California, and that the game was being developed in-house, but we can’t be sure because EA has never said anything about the project.
We don’t know for sure either, but as a gamer who’s been a fan of Gaian since it’s first days, I can tell you that the Gaian team did make quite an impression at PAX East. Of course, I’m not saying this because I want to bash EA, but because I’m a fan who wants to see Gaian get to the next stage of development.
There’s a lot of controversy surrounding Gaian because the game is a proprietary game, and at the time, its developer, EA, had a contract with the Gaian team which required them to pay Gaian royalties. Now, Gaian is also working on Gaian-powered PC games, but we’re not sure that the Gaian team are working on Gaian-powered PC games. But we’re sure that they will be making games in the future.
Gaian is still in the final stages of development and there is no confirmation that it will be released in the next 12 months. But the game is not cancelled. It’s just, well, there’s a lot of talk.
