Oh yeah, you don’t need to put off anything if you’re a contractor.
The bad news is that a good contractor, one who has spent a lot of time working on all the hard stuff, will get bored of that boring work, and will start to make money on his own. That’s bad luck. Now imagine that for some reason you had to leave that boring job to go build a new one.
Sure, if you’re really that good you should start to make money right away, but if you’ve spent a lot of time on boring, repetitive work, you may find that you’re making less than a contractor who is making money on every thing he does.
The process of creating a boring system is called a business-system. This is a very important concept because it allows you to define exactly what “boredom” means for you. If youve got a boring system that you dont want to change but you dont really have the time to do the work yourself, you could create an automated system that changes some of the repetitive tasks so they are easier to do.
This is really a case of “do what youre good at then use what youre good at”. I know its not that easy to do, but I think that if you just take a look at the business you are in and you have a few things you are good at, you can try to make your boring system easier. I think the best example is probably the system I work on most days. It is my boring business system.

My theory is that you need the people who are able to do the work, but there are also others who are in charge of the business system. If you have a lot of people, you can turn it into a business system.
Interesting, I’m going to share a story from my business, and you are going to be able to use this to build a business system. When I first started as a consultant, I decided to start with a simple spreadsheet system. I thought that if I had a spreadsheet with all the information I needed to do anything, it would be quicker than writing a report. So I created a spreadsheet and filled it with all the information I needed.
I don’t think it takes very long to fill in a spreadsheet with all the information you need to have a business. A lot of businesses have very boring business systems. You hire people, you pay them, you bill them. Most of the work in any business is performed by the people that work for you. I would say that if you have a boring business system, you are wasting your time.
It’s so true in business. Just like you wouldn’t hire people to produce a newspaper if they weren’t producing a newspaper. I think in business you should hire people to do things that have no business doing. A lot of companies have boring business systems, and I know they do, because I write about these in my blog.
