If you can’t do the basics, you’re not going to be as good as a martial artist who can.
In the old days, martial artists had to be strong, lean, and flexible to perform at the highest level. If you were a good athlete, or a really good wrestler, you could be a martial master. That’s not to say that good athletes don’t do some basic footwork; they do. But martial artists also have to be willing to learn new things. It seems that’s what keeps them from being the best.
The problem seems to be that even though martial arts can help you be better than your competitors, you don’t have to be a martial artist. Its all about how you learn the hard stuff. If you can learn the basics and build up your strength, you will be far more effective than someone who can’t even do basic handstand pushups. It takes a lot of patience and dedication and practice to learn the tricks of the trade. But it does take a good amount of skill, as the basic movements of a basic martial arts motion are very much based on timing rather than strength.
