This is an important point, and it’s something I’ve actually been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve been thinking a lot about, “Should I have been in my position?” The answer is no. That is, it is never appropriate to act in our own self-interest, and if someone is doing it, then it should be stopped.
Sometimes we act out of selfishness because we have no clue how much we are hurting the people around us. The people who have harmed us have been using our own selfishness as a means of hurting others.
The problem is when you feel like you have no one to turn to for help, but the people around you are hurting anyway, you do stupid, dangerous things. We all do stupid, dangerous things, and I think you can see why. When we feel like we have no one to turn to, we feel like we have no other options. We act out of selfishness and are thus doing the people in our lives harm.
Many people will blame the victim in these situations, but I think it’s actually a bit more complicated than that. The person in question, the one who is acting out of selfishness, is often the one who is hurting us. For example, if a person steals from you as a means of getting food and shelter, that’s actually the person who is hurting you. The person who is stealing from you is actually harming you in the same way.
I remember one time when I was talking to a woman about this whole death thing I said, “It’s like a disease, its contagious.” She said, “Oh, really, like a chicken pox?” I said, “No, it’s the exact same thing. It makes you sick but you don’t die from it, you just get a little bit sicker and then you die.
Actually, I think what the vast majority of people don’t realize is that stealing from one person is stealing from everyone. No matter how much of a person you think you are, or how much you might think your a good person, someone else out there will always outdo you. As an example, think about how much of your car’s engine is made up of oil and how much is the fuel that powers it.
