The reason is that amateur theatre is actually a good deal more expensive than professional theatre. Its really a cheap way for theatre companies to raise money. So they can pay the actors a much lower salary than what they would expect to get for performing in a professional production.
I think one of the big reasons why amateur theatre is flourishing is that there are so many people who want to be actors. When I was in high school, I read about professional actors working in theater. I was amazed at the fact that they would do the work I needed them to do. For those of us who grew up without the chance to be in a professional class, doing the work we need to do ourselves can be very rewarding.
A professional theatre production is a theatrical performance that is typically performed for an audience of paying customers. However, even though I was a professional performer, I think I would have been better off doing something else, like playing in amateur productions. Sure it’s just as easy to get arrested and get thrown in jail. But it’s really not as easy getting an job and working in the real world. Being an actor can be really lonely sometimes.
